2002 had us
boldly going - or perhaps, tapping, - where we had never dared before. In May, we stepped out in style with Richard
Harris's foot-tapping comedy about a beginners' tap dancing class, Stepping
Out! The production, directed by Jack Burgess, was very much a case of
life imitating art since - as in the play - the entire cast had to learn to
tap dance. Even before the auditions, a committed dozen hopeful hoofers -
eleven women and one token male - had already spent the winter learning to
tap. Their efforts were well worthwhile and resulted in a sparkling
production and the best audience figures for 18 years.

In the euphoria that followed the success of Stepping
Out, the decision was taken to tackle our first ever Christmas pantomime. And not just any pantomime, but an original
pantomime with tap dancing. Lesley Wolowiec came up with an idea involving
magic dancing shoes, a dragon and plenty of tap dancing and volunteered to
direct. Jack Burgess turned the ideas into a script and the result, The
Dragon's Tale (or Tail?) was staged with great success in December.
