Last Panto in Painswick
by David Tristram
Painswick Players
is in trouble. The membership has dwindled to four - the audiences aren't much bigger
- and if they don't come up with some rent money soon, they are going to be
thrown out.
Harassed director ‘Gordon’ (Kevin Parker)
seeks a new way to bring in reluctant audiences "There's only one thing
that sells
tickets these days" he argues "Sex!" Prim and
proper Margaret (Ann Dorman) is horrified, builder Bernard (Jack Burgess)
couldn’t care less as long as he doesn’t have to act and only has to make a
simple set, and Joyce, poor simple Joyce (Lesley Woloviec)
tries so hard but is one “It’s
behind you” short
of a Panto.
So begins the chaotic and hilarious build-up
to an evening of extraordinary comedy and drama – a side splitting evening we
are sure you will never forget.
Last Panto in
Painswick has three scenes with only short breaks in between.
Puss In Slippers
by Richard Tydeman

YiPPies are making their debut performance in Painswick with
this very amusing 'Potted Panto' Puss in Slippers by Richard Tydeman.
YiPPies (that's
Young Painswick Players) was launched in September, this
year, and has proved to be
immensely popular. It has attracted some very talented youngsters, but you'll
only see 50% of our members here tonight, as the others are already hard at
work on our next production, The
Magicians Nephew by C.S. Lewis, to be staged in March 2006.
We hope you enjoy tonight's performance and
we're sure you'll agree with us that the future looks very bright for our Young
Painswick Players.
Puss in Slippers is a Panto
Mini Drama with no boots on.
“Tonight, without the least
excuse,
We very proudly introduce
To all you Mums and Dads and
nippers,
Our Mini Panto,
“Puss in Slippers””
A wry and rhyming look at a traditional
pantomime tale in three scenes;
Scene 1 An Ancient Mill
Scene 2 A
Scene 3 The Ogre’s Mansion

A Tail of Two Kitties reviewed (courtesy Painswick
Beacon, January 2006)
On a wet
and windy evening - the 1st of December - the audience blew in out of the cold
and found such a welcoming hall at the Painswick Centre, with festive tables
laid out and the promise of mulled wine and mince pies to come - a lovely
informal layout for a fun evening. There was a double bill for this evening:
Jackie Herbert was making her directorial debut with a one act play by David Tristram - Last Panto in Painswick (the author had made it possible to
‘localise’ name and events) and the Yippies were making
their debut performance, after the formation of the Young Painswick Players
last September, with Puss in Slippers.
It must have been pretty tricky for Jackie
directing such an illustrious cast as Jack Burgess, Kevin Parker, Lesley Woloviec and Ann Dorman but successfully direct it she did:
the local drama group was on its last legs (so to speak), and with all four
remaining actors each pulling in different directions, things did not look
promising, and the scenario of trying to find a date when all four of the
committee (comprising the entire drama group) could all attend, was
side-splitting and all too familiar!!
After the very welcome mulled wine and mince
pies, it was time for the Yippies, who threw
themselves into Puss in Slippers by
Richard Tydeman, in great style. It was superb to see
the young people enjoying themselves so much and the boys who dressed up as
young ladies, aspiring to be the consort to the Prince, showed real talent
which one would hope to see exploited in future productions. Well done to
Lesley and Jackie for giving so much of their time and energy to such a
fantastic resource for Painswick young people.
